Today was Independence Day, the one day we trade in our greens and greys for red, white, and blue. This morning, even before the sun rose above Old Bald, I hopped on the back of a horse and rode through camp with Riding Staff announcing that it was the Fourth of July. After breakfast we held Castle by the lakefront and raised the flag while singing patriotic songs in our patriotic getup. After the hullabaloo of the early morning, I decided to cool off and chill out on the docks for a bit and watch the sailors enjoy the breeze and the kayakers practice their hip-ups. Later, I skipped to the Nature Nook just as the Farm and Garden class was preparing to frolic with the sheep.
In the afternoon, I headed down to H2O games and splashed around for a bit before I made my way over to Stagecraft to ogle at the props and set pieces that are on their way to being ready for Peter and the Starcatcher. I then went to the Barn to greet the horses and thank them for the lovely morning ride, as well as help the campers out with grooming and tacking. I even let them curry comb my own fur for a bit!
Tonight’s Evening Program was the most anticipated part of the day: the Fourth of July Carnival. From the blow-up Obstacle Course to the shaving cream Pie Toss, from the Cookie Walk to the Dunk Tank where campers got to try their arm at dunking Senior Staff, the night was an absolute success. There were shaving cream- and face paint-covered faces grinning from ear to ear all across the lakefront and waterfall field from the time the buffet BBQ dinner was served to when Jim lit up the night with his famous fireworks show. All in all, today was a day to celebrate our nation and our community and I believe we did it justice.
Stars and stripes forever,
Tajar
