Today is the first official day of summer, which makes the end of the session even more sentimental. Today began in a drizzle, but the excitement of the day seemed to blow the storm away, and we enjoyed the merest sprinkle of rain during the final “Chastle” of the session. I was so proud of all of the campers who passed levels in Archery, Tennis, Kayaking, Sailing, Riding, and Swimming, as well as the two campers who became Horsemasters today and the girls who completed the different schools of Mountaineering. After the awards ceremony, the Bull’s Eye Club congratulation, and the Dam Swimmer initiation, we all headed down to the swim docks to watch the synchronized swimming performance. I hopped along in with them and performed my best underwater somersaults. Next up was the drill team performance featuring the two newest Horsemasters and two campers who completed the level of riding this session.
After a galloping good time, we made our way to King Arthur’s Court to watch the performing arts and music classes present their final showcases, including a vintage mashup by Glee club, an ensemble of fantastic dances and tumbling acts, and a set of performances by the guitar and ukulele classes. Because it had sprinkled in the morning, the tennis courts were too wet to play the final match of the camper-counselor tennis match outside. Instead of giving up hope, a net was brought inside and the final round was played right inside of King Arthur’s court! The Evening Program tonight was Banquet, which began with a large dinner and then transitioned into a pageant put on by the counselors who reenacted the most memorable times of the session. This evening’s highlights were the enthusiastic camper composters, a recreation of Avatar campfire, and a song dedicated to the Castle on the Hill, which was symbolically opened today by a ribbon-cutting ceremony on its front porch. Although the building could not be used this session, its memory and its impression will remain on our hearts for long after this summer solstice, as will the experiences made this session. I am absolutely pleased to sign off the final note of June Session knowing that we here at Merrie-Woode, this old Tajar included, might have made that most meaningful impression on a camper and hoping that we will see everyone return in years to come.
Yours always and truly,
Tajar
