Today was the last day of regular classes before tomorrow’s Final Shows and the energy at camp has never been higher. Everyone is ready to make the most of the final days of the session, and everyone has been busily finishing up projects, completing program levels, and putting the finishing touches on performances for tomorrow. Today was also Proficiency Day down at the docks, so I hopped down to the lake quite a few times today to see campers showing all they have learned this summer in their Kayaking and Canoeing classes.
In the afternoon, I peeked into Castle where the Stagecraft class was beginning to strike the musical’s set. Even though it took the best of five weeks to put it all together, the few hours’ time it took to take it apart again didn’t feel discouraging—it felt like a completion of a task and the beginning of planning for next summer’s main attraction. After all of the day’s classes were over, the Arts and Crafts Hut filled up with campers and counselors alike vying to see the items in the Art Show. From stained glass projects to pottery, to jewelry, to photography and sewing and weaving, there were so many different examples of the campers’ talents displayed for everyone to see!
We closed out the beautiful day with a somber Closing Campfire, taking the time to reflect on the last five weeks and all of the fun and folly that has occurred. This campfire was also special because the girls that have dedicated their summers to Merrie Woode for a certain amount of time received their bracelets, a signifier of the devotion they have to this beautiful place and an emblem of the Merrie Woode spirit. As the tiny spark of fire was taken from the campfire ring and placed back into the lake, where it will remain until next year’s session, I looked down from my tree-top perch at the mountains and the lake and the campers and the counselors and thought to myself that nothing could ever be finer.
Wanting to linger a little longer,
Tajar
