As activities begin to wrap up, I spend more time running around to see what everyone’s up to before the session ends. Today I peeked into Castle to see what Drama was up to—as it turns out, they’ve memorized their lines staged their scene, and chosen their lighting and costumes all for the little one-act they will perform at Final Shows. I was quite impressed with their progress! Down at the Waterfall Field where the Mountaineers were taking some lucky campers down the High Ropes zip line, I also ran into an Arts and Crafts class which was taking mental pictures for their watercolor painting of iconic camp scenery. Also down at the docks I was watching and laughing along with some boaters who were playing Titanic, when all of a sudden they accidentally caught a fish in their boat! It was one of the more memorable experiences I’ve had at the lake in quite a while.
During Evening program, the rain ran us out of Chapel, so the whole camp huddled in Castle to hear the Vespers, or reflections, of the oldest campers. There was much crying and much laughter and the campers told stories both sad and humorous about their escapades throughout their time at Merrie Woode. It was interesting to note that every single camper ended their reflections with advice along these lines: do not take time at camp for granted, for there are only so many days in the summer and so many summers in a childhood. I believe in that as well and I can only hope that the future generations of campers heed the advice of their camper role models.
