2018_06_19Today was the last day of activities, so I decided to make the best of it and see what everyone was up to on this marvelous day. First, I went down to the archery field where the archers were trying to get their last points in before the end of the session and the campers in Landsports were playing a final game of Nukum on the volleyball court. In Farm and Garden, the campers were playing a pollination game, where they had to identify different fruits and flowers that are important for pollination. In the Dance Studio, the dancers were hard at work putting the finishing touches on their Final Shows routines and having a blast having dance parties as well.

After Rest Hour, I decided to see what the boaters down at the docks were up to, but inclement weather drove us indoors for some knot-tying, paddle-inspecting, and card games galore. In Arts and Crafts, the campers were fervently preparing for the Art Show this afternoon, setting up all of the photographs, paintings, stained glass pieces, and many other works of art. In Stagecraft and Woodworking, the campers found themselves busy striking the set of The Wind in the Willows –it always surprises me how long it takes to build something like a show and how short a time it takes to see it all go away. Similarly, tonight’s Evening Program was Closing Campfire, in which many lucky campers received their Merrie-Woode bracelets for their time spent under Old Bald, and many a sad song was sung in anticipation of our final day tomorrow. At the end of the night, a counselor took a piece of the fire from the campfire, and returned it to the lake, just as the campers will soon return to their own homes and hopefully pass on the lessons and virtues they have learned here. Although I am among the lucky ones who call this place of rarest beauty home and cannot follow the campers out into the world to see them grow, I hope for their return one day to pass on the virtues to future generations of Merrie-Woode girls and teach them, too, the lessons Dammie Day taught her campers in 1919.

Until that Merrie time,

Tajar
