In the Spirit of Sacrifice

Now in its sixth year, the Young Alumnae Challenge was once again a huge success – raising $18,375 for Camperships.  The goal was to raise 3 camp tuitions in 3 days for a total of $14,550 – one campership for each session of Camp.  This year the young alumnae raised enough to cover three full tuition Camperships (one for each session in 2020), plus additional funds to support partial Camperships!  Hooray for our young alumnae!

Our challenge this year was centered around the spirit of self-sacrifice that King Arthur calls us to practice in Follow the Gleam:

“I wish that future generations might learn from the glory of self-sacrifice—the willingness to give all, even their lives, that the poor and needy might not be oppressed, and that men might learn to live as brothers, following the gleam of the best that is in their hearts.”

This generation of alumnae follows in the footsteps of Merrie-Woode heroines, like the staff of 1979 and 1980 – represented this year by Martha Simkins Davis, author of this year’s Annual Fund letter – who sacrificed by working for free during the first few summers of the Merrie-Woode Foundation.

The reason that so many young alumnae are willing to make this sacrifice is because they believe strongly in giving the Merrie-Woode experience to others.  We asked them in their social media posts and comments to tell us “Why Camp?”  What is it that is unique about the Merrie-Woode experience that makes it such a valuable and worthy cause?  What impact has Merrie-Woode had on shaping you as a person?

Several alumnae wrote beautiful reflections of why they cherish what Merrie-Woode has given them:

Camp was one of the biggest reasons I am who I am and I want the experience I had to be possible for any girl!  -Kathleen Norton

Thankful to camp for blessing me with memories and amazing friends! -Christina Givner

Why camp? Because it empowers young women. -Mollie Murray Messick

We also set a goal of 300 gifts for this year’s challenge, and we came close with 234 donors at the close of the challenge on Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm.  (A few extra gifts came in after the deadline, and we will gladly apply those to camperships for 2020 as well.)  Next year we hope to welcome all of our generous young alumnae who donated this year back again, as well as many new supporters!

We are so thankful to each of our young alumnae, including the JCs and staff of the 2019 summer who came out in full force to support this year’s challenge.  We know that you sacrificed to give the gift of camp to more young women, and we are so proud of you.  We are tremendously grateful to all of you for making this challenge a phenomenal success each year.  Congratulations to you all on a great Young Alumnae Challenge 2019!
